Custom Staircase Woodwork and Finish Carpentry

At Frank L. Garrett Construction, we provide custom woodworking and finish carpentry for staircases, railings, newel posts, treads, risers, and other staircase components. Most of our staircase work is part of new home construction, but we also work on remodeling projects where an existing staircase needs to be updated, modernized, or given a more finished look.

Staircase projects can involve much more than simply installing treads and a railing. We build and fit custom wood components to work with the design of the home, including curved and bent-laminated pieces, custom railings, newel posts, wall caps, backplates, and other detailed components. We work with homeowners, builders, and other trades to coordinate the materials, style, dimensions, and installation details.

Detailed Woodworking From Start to Finish

Staircases often involve some of the most visible finish work in a home, and small details can make a big difference. We take the time to carefully fit, finish, and install each component so the finished staircase looks intentional and works properly with the surrounding space.

Our staircase work has included custom curved bullnoses and risers, stained wood railings, wrought iron railing combinations, replacement newel posts, custom upper railings and mounting backplates, wall caps, and modifications to existing staircases. When appropriate, we stain and finish components before installation to give us better control over the finish and help minimize the chance of stain or lacquer getting onto surrounding walls and surfaces.

We especially enjoy projects that require problem-solving and detailed woodworking. Whether we're working from architectural plans or helping develop the details with a homeowner or contractor, we can help work through the practical and visual considerations that go into a custom staircase.
