Custom Coffee Table Prototype – The Beginning of a New Furniture Line
This custom coffee table marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Frank L Garrett Construction — the start of a handcrafted furniture line built with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship that has defined Frank’s woodworking projects for decades.
Designed and built in Frank’s Redmond, Oregon woodshop, this first prototype combines dark walnut with 1/4 sawn white oak to create a piece that feels both timeless and modern. The contrast between the rich walnut base and lighter oak top gives the table a clean, balanced appearance while highlighting the natural beauty of both wood species.
From the beginning, the focus of this project was quality. Every component was carefully fit, shaped, and refined by hand throughout the build process. The piece features a solid wood lower shelf, exposed joinery details, and subtle curves that give the table character without overpowering the design.
As with many woodworking projects, finishing plays a major role in the final result. Frank tested multiple finish options and colors before selecting the final look for the piece, ensuring the wood grain and overall tone matched the vision for the table. Rubio Monocoat finishes were selected for their durability and natural appearance, helping preserve the texture and warmth of the wood.
The Story Behind “Cloud 9”
This first furniture design has been named “Cloud 9.” The name draws inspiration from the famous Greene & Greene architects of the early 1900s, who incorporated what they called the “cloud lift” design into both architecture and furniture.
For this piece, Frank wanted to build on that concept by creating the illusion that both the tabletop and lower shelf are floating in place. The subtle shaping and proportions of the base give the design a light, suspended appearance while still maintaining strength and balance.
The “9” in the name also carries meaning. Rather than viewing the piece as a “perfect 10,” Frank intentionally chose the number as a reminder that craftsmanship is always evolving and improving over time. As the furniture line develops, each new piece will continue building on the ideas and techniques that inspired this first design.
Building a Custom Furniture Line
This coffee table is the first step in a broader vision to begin offering a line of high-end custom furniture pieces handcrafted in Central Oregon. While Frank has spent decades building custom woodworking projects for homes throughout Bend, Sunriver, Sisters, and surrounding communities, furniture design has always been a passion.
Future pieces may include:
Coffee tables
Console tables
Dining tables
Benches
Built-ins
One-of-a-kind statement pieces
The focus is simple: build timeless furniture with quality materials, thoughtful design, and craftsmanship meant to last for generations.
Built to Fit Your Space
One of the goals behind the Cloud 9 design is flexibility. These tables can be built in a wide variety of wood species, finishes, and sizes to match the style and scale of each home.
The design also adapts well into:
End tables
Sofa tables
Console tables
Coordinated furniture sets
From wood selection to finish color and dimensions, each piece can be customized to fit the space and preferences of the client. Whether the goal is a natural modern look or a darker, more dramatic finish, every build is crafted individually rather than mass produced.
