Custom Reclaimed Wood Mantel Installation
This project featured a fully custom reclaimed wood mantel designed, built, and installed to complement an existing stone fireplace surround. The homeowner wanted the warmth and character of reclaimed lumber while maintaining a clean, high-end finished appearance — and the result delivered exactly that.
The reclaimed wood was sourced directly from an old barn and carefully prepared before fabrication began. Moisture readings were taken to ensure the material was properly acclimated and stable before any milling or assembly. Once ready, the wood was processed and prepared for the custom mantel build.
Each component of the mantel — including the top, bottom, and both ends — was individually fitted on-site and sculpted to match the natural contours of the stone fireplace wall. These pieces were then brought back to the shop, precisely marked, and mitered on all corners to create a seamless hollow mantel design. Even the end panels were fully mitered, creating the appearance of a solid beam while maintaining a lighter structural build.
To enhance the authentic reclaimed look, square shank decorative nails were added to the surface and hand-finished to create subtle highlights. Extensive machine and hand wire brushing was completed prior to finishing, bringing out the natural grain and texture of the wood.
The final result is a one-of-a-kind fireplace centerpiece that blends rustic character with refined craftsmanship.
